STUDENT ABSENCE POLICY

Unexcused Absences

Each 3-hour meeting of a class is considered a class session. Attendance is taken at the beginning of each class session.

Students who arrive 5 to 20 minutes late for any class session are considered tardy. Three (3) tardies equal one (1) unexcused absence.

Arriving more than 20 minutes late, or missing an entire 3-hour session is considered a full absence. This applies to all classes, whether they meet for 6 hours on the same day, or on 2 different days of the week, or for one
3-hour period per week. Students who miss both sessions of a class which meets for 6 hours in a day will incur 2 absences. Each meeting of the Foundation lecture classes is also considered a full session.

Three (3) unexcused absences equal the reduction of one whole grade from the earned grade. Four (4) unexcused absences equal failure in the course.

For all classes meeting in 5-week segments, 2 absences in any 5-week period will result in failure.

Excused Absences

An absence may be excused if there is a medical reason, family emergency or extenuating circumstances beyond the student's control. Students seeking an excused absence may bring their documentation to the Academic Advising Center, 2nd floor of the Yamasaki Building. The Advising Center will send a written notice to the student's instructors, advisor, and department.
