Description
of course: Image-making for Illustrators
Projects develop a student's ability with digital tools and
concepts. Traditional construction methods are integrated with
digital tools including digital cameras and scanners. A sketch
notebook represents 20% of the final grade.
Application: PhotoShop.
- Become adept
using a WACOM tablet & pen.
- Learn to use Adobe
Photoshop software for creating images.
- Work with digital
cameras, downloading images into the computer, learning how
to manipulate them.
- Have a working
knowledge of how to prep images for placement on a web site
using Photoshop.
- Obtain your own domain
name and create your own private web site, using Dreamweaver
for it's development.
- A brief introduction
into illustration animation using Flash will be offered.
From a work development
point of view, we will hone your imaging skills and learn some
of the more subtler aspects of manipulating images in Photoshop.
A strong emphasis will be placed on simulating environments that
you are likely to face in the image-making industry. Assignments will be constructed so as to reflect this
outlook.
Class interaction through the net will be
mandatory. We will
learn how to effectively use discussion groups and websites to
coordinate team projects. Assignments.
For the first half of the course, assignments will be peppered
throughout, usually expected to be completed within a week.
Towards the middle of the semester, we'll decide on a final
project which will be completed at the end of the course. This
one's an important one. A large part of your grade will be
determined by your ability to impress me on this final project.
Notebooks will be looked at frequently.

Week 1 -
September 4th |
Really sorry! It's
not my usual style to give my students the bums rush, but
due to last minute scheduling, I am left with one more
commitment at this time of the week. Actually, it's the last
practice with the Layabouts
before the "Dally
in the Alley" this Saturday.
Consequently, I'm having to dismiss you early today.
From here-on in, I'll be punctual and will stay after
class for any questions and further help.
Here's a quick introduction to your
instructors work:

Things to
do for next class
1. You must have signed out a
WACOM tablet from the Computer Store room before next class.
2. Make sure you bring two Iomega Zip disks for the next class
session. Nothing so sad as
losing all your work to the 'Click of Death' - an annoying
shortcoming of the Zip storage system; you can loose ALL
the information on the disk - hence the need for a backup Zip
disk. Nothing worse that having your
data become vapor-ware.
Destruction of your work due to not
backing it up will not be considered a valid excuse!
3. You are expected to keep
a notebook. Bring it to every class.
4. Be prepared to obtain a
web account. Bring your plastic next class and expect to
spend about $38.50 for a one year account & domain name
(cheap.)
Want to do it now and impress your instructor?:

this information leads to many tears and regrets.

may use for the class.

programs.
Why a website?
Take out your plastic and obtain a $38.50 account and
domain name (for a one year.)

web.

(At this point, most of you should have your web domains
up and running. Please contact
me if you are still having trouble.)
Please note that there is now a fairly extensive
"How to" section addressing basic
domain information, domain
mail configuration, accessing
your mail and configuring
your DreamWeaver app.
Fifth assignment: The class will be divided into two
groups.
We're going to pretend that each group is a graphics
company about to receive a lucrative contract. Each group
will select a coordinator/director. That person will
(judiciously) have the final say in the groups
decision-making process. Possibly use the discussion
group for interacting outside class hours.
The assignments for each group:
Group No 1 - Received a contract
from Center for World
Peace.
They need persuasive posters or web pages that will make
the American public unsympathetic to an invasion of Iraq.
Group No. 2 - Received a contract
from The Offices of the US
administration.
They need persuasive posters or web pages that will make
the American public sympathetic to an invasion of Iraq.
Each individual in the group has
to produce at least one poster or web page. All work must
be executed with WACOM tablet, the final product is to be
electronic (printed material not necessary.)
At the end of the assignment, each group will critique the
other group. I'll listen and - at the risk of becoming
decidedly unpopular - decide which group "won".
